Sustainable change; HEALTHY HABITS

The start of a new year always tends to trigger reflection and even perhaps some comparison (particularly to the highlight reels you may see other people sharing). But you know what? You are in your own race, and you only need to focus on you.

If you are wanting to make some change relating to your health & fitness in 2024, maybe you have started (or are considering) so new years resolutions or goals.

As an expert performance and disordered eating dietitian & nutritionist, I would really consider avoiding anything drastic which cuts out whole food groups or requires strict macro/calorie counting. In fact, the easiest and most sustainable way you can make changes towards a healthier happier you is by working on habits. It might not sound fancy or exciting, but hear me out….

Our day to day routine is made up of hundred of little habits we do not even think about! We get up > flick on the kettle > visit the bathroom. We drive to work > take the same route > park in the same car park > day starts. We get home > walk into the lounge-room > turn on the television > let in the dog and say hello > perhaps make a start on dinner.

All of these things have become habits, a routine that is built up over months, years, even decades.

It can take up to 60 days for a new habit to become routine or subconscious like all of those examples above.

If we make change that drastically changes our routine (one that we have had for god knows how long) - it can be pretty hard to maintain. Particularly if S&%T hits the fan, which likely will happen because that’s just life!

You cannot go from A ➡️ Z and expect to be able to maintain it if you haven’t made the habit changes in between (you need to make B, C, D etc. part of your routine before Z is possible or sustainable).
